If you’re thinking about moving to the southwest Twin Cities, here’s a question I get all the time: Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, Edina, or Bloomington, which city is actually the best? It’s a great question, and the honest answer is that each one wins in different ways. So let’s break down what each city brings to the table.

Edina is the luxury leader. If you’re after the high end of the southwest metro, this is it. Edina is consistently among Minnesota’s highest-rated school districts, and it has historically seen some of the strongest long-term appreciation of the four, driven by limited inventory and steady demand. The one tradeoff is property taxes: Edina tends to carry a larger tax bill, simply because homes there cost more. If a luxury lifestyle is what you want, Edina is my pick.

Eden Prairie is the best all-around balance. Eden Prairie is also one of Minnesota’s top-rated school districts, and it’s been an excellent wealth builder over the last decade as home values have climbed. On top of that, it offers real everyday convenience, with Eden Prairie Center anchoring the shopping and amenities. When you add up school ratings, value, and lifestyle together, Eden Prairie is the city that strikes the best overall balance, which is why I give it the nod for families who want strong schools without giving up value or convenience.

Minnetonka is the lake-and-executive-home city. Minnetonka rounds out the trio of top-rated school districts, and it’s been a strong performer for appreciation as well. What sets it apart is lifestyle: this is the place for lake living and executive homes, with Ridgedale providing convenient shopping close by. If your ideal picture of southwest metro life includes being near the water in a larger home, Minnetonka is where I’d point you first.

Bloomington is the value champion. Bloomington delivers strong value because buyers can generally get more house for their money here than in the other three cities. It’s also often one of the more affordable options for property taxes, which keeps your monthly cost of ownership down. And it’s the shopping and entertainment heavyweight of the group, thanks to the Mall of America. For the best value for the dollar, Bloomington wins hands down.

So here’s how I’d sum it up. For the best luxury lifestyle, it’s Edina. For the best balance of school ratings, value, and amenities, it’s Eden Prairie. For the best value for the dollar, it’s Bloomington. And for the best lake lifestyle and executive homes, it’s Minnetonka.
